Is there any chance that someone could get this message through to the people in Congress: you are the LEGISLATIVE not the EXECUTIVE branch of government. We refer to the New York Times editorial today titled A Breakthrough Agreement at Risk.
It seems that everyone these days is playing "executive", including Congress. In part that is due to the fact that U.S. President Barack Obama is not being the strong CEO of the country that he needs to be,
but, at the same time,
you have a great number of people in Congress who should not be there, who do not have the intellectual or educational qualifications to be competent Senators or House of Representatives members, and who seem to think that their job is playing "President" when they can.
We do not care what political party these people come from. Voters, send these people back to the confined provincial corners from which they came!
Prior to studying law at Stanford University, while I was an undergraduate student at the University of Nebraska, one of my good childhood friends was at Yale University, where the student radio covered the elections. I had agreed for him to cover Nebraska and to report on a Senatorial election outcome as soon as an "official" statement could be made. Yale was famous for "scooping" the established mainstream media on election forecasts through this system of student reporters in the field.
In any case, I had a press pass and all that and got to know one of the Nebraska Senators first hand at the location that I was at. A nice man. There was not much more you could say. He might have been good at representing the interests of Nebraska in Washington D.C., at least so one hoped, but it appeared to me that he was the type of person who would be vastly underqualified for dealing with issues that dealt with a bigger legal, economic, national or political nature.
I am guessing many members of Congress, even today, are similar. They are popular community heroes who win the local voting popularity contests, but often bring nothing of great substance to the table, neither a good understanding of law or economics, nor an incisive comprehension of world political affairs.
Yet, these people are playing "executive".
Please, spare us.
Stick to YOUR job, which is legislative, designing and passing new laws for the good of the country, principally on pressing domestic issues, and there are thousands of them, which have not been properly resolved, in part because you people in Congress are NOT doing your job, not even passably!
The answer to the question of what U.S. Congresspersons are doing meddling in foreign affairs is a mystery of our era, sticking their noses into areas where they have little expertise, and often, insufficient information to enable them to make judicious decisions.
