3D Printing? Nike Flyknit Shoes? User Designed Bags and T-Shirts? Digital Technology and 3D Additive Manufacturing Manifest the New Revolution in Industrial Design and Manufacturing

3D Printing? ("Hot, in and sexy", PC Mag)
and what about the Nike Flyknit Shoes?

If you are not familiar with the new coming technology of 3D Printing, take a look at the website of 3D Systems, major pioneer in the field, and read PC Mag's article by Tony Hoffman at 3D Systems Cube 3D Printer (the image below is linked from that article):

This new technology will revolutionize our manufacturing world.

Did you know, for example (from the Wall Street Journal)?
""The Nike Flyknit is the world's first mass-produced consumer product made using additive manufacturing," says Maurice Conti, director of strategic innovation at Autodesk, which worked with Nike on the Flyknit project. "It's a hugely significant advance, not the least because, once you start doing things this way it obviously takes a lot of the labor cost out of the equation."" [emphasis added]
Our own publications have for the past decade used print on demand technology, a publishing format often scoffed at in uniformed academic, legal and business circles. Quite erroneously.

As it now turns out, "print on demand" and similar technologies such as personalizing your own bag or designing your own T-Shirt online are among real pioneers at the forefront of a new "demand printing" revolution in industrial design and manufacturing that goes far beyond printing on paper.

John Koten at the Wall Street Journal has the story in:

Advanced Manufacturing: The New Industrial Revolution

Koten writes inter alia:
"[T]echnological advances now allow manufacturers to invent new ways of fabricating things that represent an extreme departure from the classic production-line model. By far the most significant of these steps forward is additive manufacturing—a process of making a three-dimensional object of virtually any shape from a digital model."
In fact, we are thinking of getting a pair of Nike Flyknit Chukkas:  Part Boot, Part Sneaker, Part Sweater. This is simply a pioneer shoe.

By the way, nothing in this posting is paid advertising!
Rather, and although we often write about "the ancient past",
THIS is the future.

You have to appreciate both.
And keep your feet in the present.
