Thieves should not be jailed, says law expert,
writing inter alia:
"Andrew Ashworth, Vinerian professor of English law at the University of Oxford, said courts should issue fines, compensation orders and community sentences for those convicted of theft, fraud or handling stolen goods."Ashworth says jail should be reserved for dangerous criminals.
This applies particularly to the United States of America, where a disproportionate percentage of the population is not only behind bars, but where America in fact ranks number one in the world for jailing its citizens.
That is a far cry from the image of freedom that America tries to present to the world.
